Thomas Benson

One of the most diligent and committed players in our club, first coming to your webmaster’s attention as a member of the Senior Firsts several seasons back, and, chosen by Keith Quinn as our player of the day! We beat Keith’s old club, Wellington, 30-3. Thomas Benson has agreed to answer some questions.

When and where did you first play rugby?

I started in the Third form at Aotea College. I first started playing on the wing then I moved into lock. Later on the Wainui colts coaches (Steve Crilly was one of them) thought I would be better in the loose trio than tucked away at lock and I’ve been in the loose ever since.

What attracted you to the game?

My best friend’s Dad coached the Pare-Plim Womens team at the time and we used to go along to the trainings and help out, his Dad thought I should play rugby, so convinced me to change from soccer. Dad almost disowned me when I changed, but, never mind.

What other sports interested you as a youngster?

I played soccer till third form, then played rugby on Saturdays, we had an inter school rugby league competition on Wednesdays and I played basketball on Friday nights. The rest of the time you could find me on my skateboard, ha, good times!

And what was it about Hutt Old Boys Marist, that you chose to  play for us instead of another club?

I came to Hutt because I knew a couple of people here and wanted the chance to play Premier rugby, Petone was never an option, haha.

What has been the most memorable moment in your rugby career?

Winning the Spillane two times in a row, (I had a year off).

And Amy is Supporter Number One?

Yes she has always been, and the toughest critic! Amy’s parents always come along as well, so I get my fair share of insight into all our games.

Next: Mike Kingsbeer.
